چکیده

THE literature apparently contains only four pathological examinations of the eye in hereditary ochronosis, and all of very recent date. The first two were carried out on biopsy material (Seitz, 1954; Rodenhiiuser, 1957) and the other two on the whole eye (Rones, 1960; Allen, O'Malley, and Straatsma, 1961). An ochronotic eye enucleated because of a mistaken diagnosis of malignant melanoma was examined only macroscopically as the discolouration of the sclera was thought to be due to formalin fixation (Skinsnes, 1948). The present report deals with a further example of this condition, and comprises the first histological account of an ochronotic globeremoved during the life of the patient.

On the ocular findings in ochronosis: a systematic review of literature

BACKGROUND Ochronosis/Alkaptonuria is a tyrosine metabolism disorder where accumulation of homogentisic acid, in eye, skin, cartilage and several other connective tissues leads to a black pigmentation of the affected tissues. It is autosomal-recessive inherited in men with a frequency of 1-9/1,000,000. While it is clear that pigment deposits lead to joint destruction, renal stone formation and ...

Ochronosis as an unusual cause of valvular defect: a case report

INTRODUCTION Alkaptonuria (also known as ochronosis) is a genetic disorder characterised by the accumulation of homogentisic acid deposits in connective tissue. In rare cases, ochronosis can cause valvular heart disease. CASE PRESENTATION We present the case of a 68-year-old Caucasian man with alkaptonuria-associated degenerative valvular defects with aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve insuff...

Alkaptonuria: A case report

Alkaptonuria is a rare inborn error of metabolism with autosomal recessive inheritance with a mutation in homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase. It results in accumulation of homogentisic acid in connective tissues (ochronosis). Most common ocular manifestations are bluish-black discoloration of the conjunctiva, cornea, and sclera. In this case report, a 39-year-old Indian male patient with additional ...

Alkaptonuric ochronosis: a case report.

Alkaptonuric ochronosis is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder resulting in a deficiency of homogentisic acid oxidase (alkaptonuria). Ultimately, this enzyme deficiency enables homogentisic acid to accumulate, become polymerized, and be systemically deposited within various tissues of the body (ochronosis). As the disease progresses, tissue deposition of polymerized homogentisic acid ...
